Pretact®

A revolution in the world of (mould-free) bamboo sticks: Pretact®

In the search for a more efficient antifungal treatment for bamboo split sticks, Van Nifterik proudly introduces the Pretact® treatment. This treatment is available in two variants: traditionally dyed (black) and caramelized for a natural look. With caramelization, the sugars are burned out of the stick, which also gives reduced susceptibility to mould and provides a natural color which eliminates the need for dyeing.

With changing growing conditions, including the switch to Led lighting and a decrease in available fungicides, mould on sticks at nurseries is becoming more common. This problem has led to the search for alternatives, which began about 2.5 years ago. At Van Nifterik, we set up our own test site, where we tested many pesticide combinations. At Hazeu Orchids (orchid nursery) also actively participated in the trials. This resulted in the successful introduction of Pretact®.

The Hazeu brothers, who previously won the 2022 Greenovation Award for their hexagon pot, see the Pretact® treatment as a logical step in their pursuit of sustainability. From the beginning, Hazeu was involved in the trials at their production sites, where no mould and no plant damage were detected during the year.

“This is a significant step toward sustainability and we can now move forward for several more years. Pretact® will make plasticized sticks obsolete.” - Paul Verstegen, Sales Manager at Hazeu Orchids.

The benefits of Pretact® are not only functional, but also environmentally friendly. The natural look of the caramelized canes allows consumers to see how the industry is actively contributing to a more sustainable future. Several orchid growers have already made the switch to Pretact®-treated sticks, and this treatment is expected to be widely available in the industry soon.

This is a revolution in the stick world.

From January 28 to 31, 2025 Van Nifterik will be present at the IPM in Essen, Germany, where the new Pretact® stics will be on display. With this innovation we take an important step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
